Just Another Meal

Snow on the ground gets thicker as time ticks away,
and we take a bite.
Bonfire crackles, wood grows blacker,
and we take a bite.
Shadows dance, and wind howls as they rebound around the rocky walls,
and we take a bite.
Blizzards wash away another chance, taking yet another life,
and we take a bite.
It's okay,
it's okay,
it's okay–
It's not okay.
Skin shivering, teeth clattering, bodies huddle up together in the corner,
and we take a bite.
Mind whirring, heart numbing, unspoken words loud enough to scream in the silence,
and we take a bite.
Guilt creeping, fear lingering, desperation assuring that everything is fine,
and we take a bite.
Tears welling, stomach churning, need for survival to keep pushing past the edge,
and we take a bite.
It's not okay,
it's not okay,
it's not okay–
It's okay.
Eyes hollow filled with horror, we had no other choice,
and we take a bite.
Body mangled, stomach wide open, we had no other choice,
and we take a bite.
Innards missing, bloodied hands threading, we had no other choice,
and we take a bite.
Bones piled and buried, flesh torn and chewed, we had no other choice,
and we take a bite.
We're sorry,
we're sorry,
we're sorry–
We're not sorry.
The night was cold and our stomachs full,
they simply were unlucky.
We did something very wrong,
but in the end, it was just another meal.
